On Monday 21 March 2005, HRH Prince Faisal, the Regent, of Jordan inaugurated
the first national botanic garden in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The
Royal Botanic Garden will be the first botanical collection of living plants
that is open to the public in Jordan. It will be a regional centre for native
plant conservation, public education, and scientific research and will have
links with other gardens, both in the region and worldwide.

researchers led by RTI International has begun a two-year effort to
search for drugs to treat Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, cancer and other
diseases among the diverse plants and other organisms of Jordan.

BETHESDA, MARYLAND--A consortium of Federal agencies,
including the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Science
Foundation (NSF), and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA),
announces 12 new awards under the third review cycle of the
International Cooperative Biodiversity Groups (ICBG) program. Support
for this program will total approximately $5 million per year over the
next five years, shared among NIH, NSF, and USDA. The Fogarty
International Center, which led development of the program in 1993,
administers and supports it with the co-sponsors.

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NORTH CAROLINA--The
Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan's rich biodiversity creates a "flora bridge" joining
the continents of Asia, Africa, and Europe. Collaborators at
RTI, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (VA
Tech),
and the Jordan University
of Science and Technology (JUST) will investigate plants and
predator bacteria in Jordan as possible sources of antimicrobial,
anticancer,
and central nervous system active compounds.
